Mian Haji Baba Graveyard, Lilownai
The Mian Haji Baba Graveyard, situated in Lilownai, District Shangla, is a historic and sacred burial ground of the Papeni Syedan community. According to local traditions and ancestral records, the graveyard dates back to the 1630s, making it one of the oldest graveyards in the region and an important symbol of the area's religious, cultural, and family heritage.
The land for this graveyard was generously donated by Syed Mian Aslam for the collective use of the Papeni Syedan. Since its establishment, it has served as the final resting place of countless generations of Syeds, scholars, elders, and respected members of the community.
Mian Haji Baba and his brother are both buried within this graveyard, and their graves continue to be places of remembrance and respect for their descendants and visitors. The graveyard also contains the graves of many members of the Termezai Sadaat, with the majority of their elders and family members buried here over the centuries.
To maintain family lineage and ancestral records, the graveyard is traditionally divided into sections according to different family branches. Among the prominent family sections are:
- Mula Khel (Descendants of Mian Muhammad Hakeem)
- Niqab Khel
- Tango Khel
- Miangul Khel
- Mashar Khel
Each section reflects the historical presence and continuity of these noble Syed families, preserving their genealogical connections and ancestral heritage. The arrangement of the graves according to family lineage has helped maintain the historical identity of the community for generations.
The Mian Haji Baba Graveyard is more than a burial ground; it is a living historical monument that represents the spiritual legacy, unity, and traditions of the Papeni Syedan and Termezai Sadaat. For nearly four centuries, it has connected descendants with their ancestors and continues to stand as a testament to the enduring heritage of the Syed families of Lilownai.
Preserving this graveyard is essential for safeguarding the history, genealogy, and cultural identity of future generations, ensuring that the memories and contributions of the ancestors remain alive for centuries to come.
